Description

This is an amputation kit from the London instrument makers S. Maw and Son.  The company went through many names from the 1820's to the 1900's, this form of the mane indicates a date in the 1860's. London instruments were the finest made at the time, and were often used by US physicians, particularly in the  south during the Civil war.  This kit came from a Richmond Virginia estate and has no owner information.  The only clue to where it was used is a scrap of early newspaper that was used to wrap  the rolled bandage
and which appears to be from a mid 1800's newspaper from Huntington West Virginia.
The kit includes a 14 inch bone saw, 14.5 and 12.5 inch flesh knives, and curved probe, all with checkered ebony handles,  a straight all metal probe, nippers,  tourniquet and block, two needles, the rolled bandage or lint,  and the newspaper scrap.  Only the first 3 pieces are marked.  The box measures 16 by 5.5 by 2.6 inches
The Instruments are in good condition.  The kit is missing the smallest flesh knife, forceps, and scalpel. Case in good condition, closes tightly, hinges good, side latches and lock works, (key included).  Missing brass plate from top. Please ask any questions
